UPDATE: Twitter is back online!

Looks like Facebook and Twitter are experiencing load issues today. Ironically, I first noticed the Twitter problem when I tried to tweet about the Facebook errors. This often happens when websites are hit with massive amounts of traffic, either due to breaking news that everyone’s reading or a website hack.

Twitter down today? Yup…Facebook which is experiencing outages of its own, although fortunately less frequent ones. Mashable staff are experiencing everything from “Network Errors” (below) to a good percentage of pages simply failing to load…commenters add that they’re also struggling with Facebook, the likely cause being a flood of Twitter (Twitter) traffic hitting the site.

And…it turns out Twitter was hit by a denial-of-service attack from some stupid hackers:

Twitter users trying to deliver their daily status updates have hit a snag this morning, as the micro-blogging service is experiencing an outage.

“We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly,” says a post from the Twitter status page posted at about 9:43 p.m. ET.

Today, Facebook announced the forthcoming availability of usernames for user profiles and Facebook Pages beginning at 12:01am EDT Saturday, June 13, 2009. Now you can have a personalized URL for your Page (facebook.com/yourname).

A: If you are an administrator of a Facebook Page, you will be able to choose your username at facebook.com/username just like a user selecting a username for their profile. There will be an interface for you to choose usernames for the Pages you administer.
