I just came across an excellent interview with my fave film composer Danny Elfman, who discusses his film score for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland! I’ve been a fan of Danny Elfman since Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, which was his first film score and Tim Burton’s first film.

Here’s a great quote from the interview – the rest is good too:

“My score was not going to be about the Mad Hatter or the Red Queen,” Elfman says. “The ‘falling down a hole’ music is going to be wild, crazy falling-down-a-hole music. Two armies meeting — I can almost write that automatically. That’s the easy part. The hard part is Alice’s trajectory. I needed the music to tie it all together as she goes from this kind of confused child to a bewildered young lady to becoming Alice as a hero who finds herself in the center of this big story where she has a huge part to play.” Continue reading at Wired.com

I’m a child of the ’80s, so of course I have to share the first trailer for The A-Team movie with you! Here’s what I had to say about it in a tweet for @theanimeblog:

“Just saw the trailer for the new A-Team movie. It alternates between awesome and horrible. You’ll see: http://bit.ly/7j5GOO”

I’m sure we’ll see several trailers before the release date. The A-Team comes out in theaters on June 11, 2010.

“In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today’s Sci-Fi Drawing of the Day is from Avatar, the amazing film by James Cameron just made over a billion dollars worldwide. So I decided to do a really, really quick (seriously – two minutes tops) sketch of Neytiri, the Na’vi played by Zoe Saldana.

Sci-Fi Drawing of the Day: Invader Zim!

For today’s Sci-Fi Drawing of the Day, I decided to draw Invader Zim! What more can I say other than it’s my favorite cartoon ever. Which is different than my favorite anime series. That would be either Chrono Crusade or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Anyway, here’s what I used:

Pencil, ink, Prismacolor and my favorite drawing paper – 26lb bright white color laser.

Today’s Sci-Fi Drawing of the Day is ‘My Stormtrooper’ (from Star Wars). He’s a little different than the others: He has great aim and a generally pleasant demeanor.

Oh Look – New Clash of the Titans Posters. Blah Humbug!

I’m not exactly excited about the film, but here are the first New Clash of the Titans posters, which debuted here. I like the texture and atmosphere the photos create, but I don’t like the logo. The typography is weak and the metal/stone texture doesn’t work for me either. But what I really dislike about the poster is how the second one totally gives away one entire scene, and almost spoils the ending. Check ‘em out:

Poster One - The ‘artsy’ one: Featuring some random creatures, Perseus yelling about the giant scorpion that’s right behind him and what I’m guess to be the ‘Three Fates’.

Poster Two – Perseus Rides Pegasus: who should be a beautiful white flying horse but here it looks like one of the four Horseman of the Apocalypse, which he is definitely not.

Poster Three – Perseus with Medusa’s head: Yeah, as if this doesn’t totally give away the ending.

So there you have it. Three posters for a film that I should be excited about but am not. Enjoy!

Original Clash of the Titans Film? Great! Clash of the Titans Remake Teaser Trailer? Yuck!

Clash of the Titans is one of the great 1980s fantasy films that I grew up with. The story is based off the myth of Perseus (played by Harry Hamlin), who is the son of Zeus (played by Laurence Olivier). He must save the Princess Andromeda by completing a bunch of challenging (and almost impossible) tasks that Zeus has created. These include capturing Pegasus (an awesome flying horse), slaying Medusa (who has snakes for hair that can turn you into stone), and defeating the Kraken (an enormous sea monster).

It’s a weird 1940s/1980s hybrid film featuring visual effects courtesy of stop-motion master Ray Harryhausen. There are tons of incredible creature designs (Calibos being my favorite), fun action (the Medusa battle) and epic scope (the Kraken) that it made a strong impression on me as a five-year old.

For me, it’s a pretty great, nostalgic fantasy film. When I originally heard the news that it was being remade, I was mostly interested to see what the cast would be like, how they would update the creatures and pump up the action. Once I heard that the usually-awesome Sam Worthington (as Perseus) and Liam Neeson (as Zeus) were signed up I was even more interested.

So we finally have a glimpse of (New) Clash of the Titans and it’s not what I was expecting from a teaser trailer:

I’m not so crazy about it. I love great teaser trailers. When properly edited, they can immediately make you want to see the film. Which I guess this does, but (CAUTION: RANT) it shows so much crap that I certainly hope the ‘more’ is better than this. I have no idea of why they chose to show us a bunch of random battles and ork-like creatures. Why was the scorpion the only big ‘baddie’ that was highlighted? What’s up with the earthy-desaturated style? (END RANT)

Oh well. Hopefully ‘New’ Clash of the Titans is better than the teaser trailer makes it out to be. What do you think of the teaser?

Happy Birthday Sesame Street! As a kid, the show taught me so much and introduced me into Jim Henson’s world. In addition to the vast amounts of knowledge I gained from the show, it provided me with lots of creative inspiration.
