Tonight marks the beginning of the great Facebook User Name War™. What do I mean? Well, tonight you’ll be able to change your Facebook address from something like this… http://www.facebook.com/098309380980298487

…into the more friendly http://www.facebook.com/lotsofnumbers. Rather than try to explain what this means in my own words, I’ll let the Facebook team take care of it:

Coming Soon: Facebook Usernames

We’re planning to offer Facebook usernames to make it easier for people to find and connect with you. When your friends, family members or co-workers visit your profile or Pages on Facebook, they will be able to enter your username as part of the URL in their browser. This way people will have an easy-to-remember way to find you. We expect to offer even more ways to use your Facebook username in the future.

Facebook Usernames Coming Soon for Pages

Today, Facebook announced the forthcoming availability of usernames for user profiles and Facebook Pages beginning at 12:01am EDT Saturday, June 13, 2009. Now you can have a personalized URL for your Page (facebook.com/yourname).

Facebook Help Center > Usernames: Facebook Pages

Q: How can I secure a username for my Page?
A: If you are an administrator of a Facebook Page, you will be able to choose your username at facebook.com/username just like a user selecting a username for their profile. There will be an interface for you to choose usernames for the Pages you administer.

Facebook Username Page

Right now it’s a handy countdown timer ticking down to doomsday!

Tip: Don’t Steal Company Names for your Facebook Username

Before you even think about trying to grab http://www.facebook.com/nike or another popular brand, you’d better read up on Digital Media Law!

Tip: Trademark Holder’s Facebook Username Rights

If you’re a trademark holder, you can sort of ‘pre-register’ your trademark:

Preventing the Registration of a Username: IMPORTANT: This form is solely for rights holders interested in preventing their trademarks from being registered as usernames. Please note that unrelated inquiries through this form will not receive a response.

Good luck and don’t step on anyone’s toes!
